Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome: is this an overlooked cause of desaturation in the immediate postoperative period?
We report the case of a 38-yr-old man who presented for an emergency mastoidectomy and suffered from severe upper airways obstruction in the postoperative period. Subsequent questioning revealed a history of heroic snoring and further investigations proved a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea.
متن کاملEvaluation of the premature infant at risk for postoperative complications.
We reviewed anaesthetic records of 35 infants with a history of prematurity, who presented for elective herniorrhaphy. We applied a scoring system to help evaluate risk of postoperative complications. Six patients experienced postoperative complications. All six patients had a score of five or more and gave history of either apnoea or a history of moderate bronchopulmonary dysplasia. A preopera...
متن کاملRegional (spinal, epidural, caudal) versus general anaesthesia in preterm infants undergoing inguinal herniorrhaphy in early infancy.
BACKGROUND With improvements in neonatal intensive care, more preterm infants are surviving the neonatal period and presenting for surgery in early infancy. Inguinal hernia is the most common condition requiring early surgery, appearing in 38% of infants whose birth weight is between 751 grams and 1000 grams. Approximately 20% to 30% of otherwise healthy preterm infants having general anaesthes...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization of the cystic fibrosis airway requires chronic therapy with inhaled antibiotics for nearly all patients. Clinician options in the US, however, are limited to tobramycin nebulizer solution (TNS) and aztreonam for inhalation solution (AZLI); in the EU and many other parts of the world, colistimethate and colistimethate dry powder for inhalation (CDPI) are also ...
متن کاملExogenous Pulmonary Surfactant as a Vehicle for Antimicrobials: Assessment of Surfactant-Antibacterial Interactions In Vitro
Owing to its unique surface-active properties, an exogenous pulmonary surfactant may become a promising drug delivery agent, in particular, acting as a vehicle for antibiotics in topical treatment of pneumonia. The purpose of this study was to assess a mutual influence of natural surfactant preparation and three antibiotics (amikacin, cefepime, and colistimethate sodium) in vitro and to identif...
